Into the Wild

In your lifetime

A New Creature Roams the Earth

Sometime this year or the next, an event comparable to the development of organized agriculture some ten thousand years ago may occur: large autonomous robots are to be released into the wild to rove American streets and highways. Google is lobbying the Nevada state legislature to allow its robotic cars to ply their roads sans drivers. These cars will presumably have access to Google’s numerous technological resources, such as web search, Google Maps, Google Earth, Google Voice (yes, they’ll have cell phones), gmail, text to speech, and Google Translate, aside from onboard GPS, computers, laser rangefinders and god knows what else. They will be skulking around, knowing exactly where they are and where they are going, who lives nearby, what businesses are around them, and with their face recognition software and vast library of images they will be able to recognize many of the people they see as they drive around. If those people have a gmail account, Google has already been kind enough to read their mail, filter out the spam, and sort it in order of importance. As they drive around, all the technologies that are put in play are improved, refined, and evolved. Large quantities of additional data enter the Googleplex for further classification and storage, adding ever more to the machine knowledge already in their computing empire. They will undoubtedly also be developing and discovering use cases integrating the robots into their menu of business products and services. This marks the end of that unimaginably long time on earth during which only creatures of biological origin roamed the lands. Our mechanical progeny are finally being born.
As they cruise our cities and towns, they will know where they are, and just as importantly, know where we are. When see them driving by you might as well wave at them, because as time goes by they will be increasingly likely to know who you are, and maybe even make a good guess as to where you are going and what you are doing. They know where all the WiFi hotspots are, and which are not encrypted. They will know which of their logged in users are there as well.
Local miscreants will learn to make sport of them. The cars must make use of maps and other data collected beforehand, or they will become confused. If enough changes are placed around them, they will need to stop and engage in significant scanning of their environment and consultations with the mothership, and meanwhile they are fair game for mischief. Google will need to develop strategies to deal with such playfulness.
Why the bombastic comparison with the rise of agriculture near the beginning of the Holocene or Anthropocene Epoch? Farming allowed a drastic reorganization of labor and the creation and concentration of significant new wealth on a scale that was probably unimaginable to hunter-gatherers. The amount of time and labor needed to supply a typical meal dropped to a fraction of what it had been before, freeing up labor that was instead used to build civil infrastructure and centralized imperial civilizations. A far more vigorous economy swept over the land, in which trade and handicrafts expanded from cottage industries into international commerce. Craftspeople and merchants proliferated and cross-pollinated societies, and powerful plutocracies appeared, asserting their right to dominate their fellows as god-given.
Large scale slavery and human trafficking appeared both as a result of this new concentration of wealth and as its sustained creator, a self-perpetuating feedback loop. These grand empires of the past cemented their hold on power through massive military and security organizations, which in turn supported a lucrative arms race that has endured for thousands of years. It is a prime driving force for enormous wealth concentration even today.

The Post-Anthropocene Epoch

With the birth of large commercial enterprises owning fleets of autonomous robots, a new era of cost-effective “labor” akin to slavery is born. The robots are cheaper even now than human employees, and the game becomes one of creating robots that substitute for human labor whenever it is practical to do so. Robots will replace human workers when 1) they can be programmed or trained to do the same tasks with comparable accuracy and productivity, 2) they can be cost effectively outfitted with mechanical attachments appropriate to the job, and 3) this is achieved at an annual amortized cost that is comparable or less expensive than a human being doing the same job at the same level of productivity. The distinction between programming and training is significant. Writing more and more computer code to create more and more behaviors is self-limiting. It is an obstacle that slows the development of robots that can replace humans. The holy grail is in devising robot architectures that can be trained, rather than programmed. If the training can be based on videos of humans doing the job, possibly complemented with live training, then far more complex behaviors can be had from the robots at much lower cost. With additional focused video or on the job training, the robots’ behaviors can be continuously improved. When this is achieved on a large scale with robots versatile enough to make use of it, the fate of human labor will be sealed.
Some human jobs have moved in that direction already. It is not hard to imagine robots operating the garbage trucks that ply our neighborhoods with large and rather dexterous claws to pick up garbage cans and empty them into the truck. Especially easy to imagine because the first autonomous robots will themselves be motor vehicles. Fast food restaurants, factories, delivery services, and many other businesses are also mechanized and carefully structured enough that autonomous robots will not be so difficult to fold into the mix. It is getting easier and easier to imagine such a future.
All of this is most certainly comparable to the spectacular changes that occurred in human affairs with the adoption of organized agriculture and the management of its resulting wealth creation. It is worth noting that the consequences of the application of diverse fleets of autonomous robots to industrial-scale military operations will also be comparable, and will very likely far exceed them. A whole new book of Asymmetric warfare will be written in our lifetimes.
The time to ponder our fate in a world swarming with robots has finally arrived.

Robot Armies

Rise of the Machines

We are already inundated with robotic devices. Our cars are filled with microprocessors that not only make everything work but make the car compensate for our errors, such as leaving the headlights on, or helping us by making sure the lights stay on until everyone is out of the car. Their behaviors are becoming more and more sophisticated, and cars that can drive around in actual traffic with no human intervention have been around for a while. We speak to robotic customer support systems on the phone, and robots take photographs and videos of traffic violations to later send them through the pipeline for us to get fined. Robotic systems create standardized reports meant for human eyes, process our email, vacuum the carpet in homes across the country, and huge semi-robotic claws pick up our garbage every week. Note that I am conflating “robot” with “computer” or “automated or semi-automated device” to a great extent. Now that robots are upon us, it seems obvious that they are all variations of the same phenomenon. Changes in our email, bank accounts, and so on that exist “in the cloud” are every bit as real in our lives as the cars we drive. The distinction between physical reality and virtual reality is quickly being blurred.

Cell phones with augmented reality functions are already on the market. They are all in contact with one or another data repository in the cloud, such as email, web search, media downloads, geo-location, banking and eCommerce, and the vast world of social networking. The more apps that are installed and set up, the more likely it is that the phone is exchanging data with the cloud. They report where we are and can figure out where we might be going. They let us know where our friends are and suggest nearby places we may wish to visit. The phones are our link to the cloud and to other users.

There is a dark side, of course. Malicious software developers and distributors are diligently sneaking apps onto our phones to listen to us and take actions based on what we type and what we say as we interact with people or automated services. Criminals are potentially at our very fingertips, virtually walking right beside us without our knowing it. Criminals, governments, companies, strangers, friends and family, there could be all sorts of silent passengers in our digital devices and our robots.

The End of a World

We are witnessing the end of a world as it plays out all around us. Nearly everything that surrounds us, at least in First World urban environments, possesses some kind of digital interface or belongs to some kind of computerized management system. In other words, everything around us is somehow mediated by some sort of partially or completely automated system, and most of these systems are linked to other similar ones. Larger systems link smaller ones, and even larger ones link them in turn. Our surroundings are watched, counted, maintained, controlled, or otherwise manipulated by one or more automated or semi-automated control networks. As we embrace the constant interaction with digital devices of various sorts, our own lives become permeated with computer mediation.

Most of the information we receive about our world is tuned not merely by focus groups as in the past, but by live capture of behavioral data that are processed several times a day to reach conclusions about our behaviors and to take some sort of action based on them. Usually, this takes the form of tailoring advertising to us in our news and entertainment media. It is expanding to tailor other information to the conclusions reached by the worldwide web of robots, such as anticipating what news we want and what political commentary we may wish to receive, what entertainment we may want to consume, what food we may want to have for lunch the next day, and even what people we may want to meet. They are quickly becoming key intermediaries between us and the rest of the world, including our fellow humans. The world that is ending is the world in which people had to decide things either for themselves or among themselves. In the new world, everything we do will be influenced by our robotic assistants.

A Diabolical Plan

There are no robotic overlords controlling everything according to some master plan. The diabolical plan is that the robots operate according to the rules of 20th century consumerism. They are decentralized distributed networks of independent entities whose purpose is to take as much of our money as possible, as quickly as possible, as cheaply as possible. In that they are united in purpose and don’t really need to coordinate with each other except to the extent that they can sell each other services. A feedback loop is created, in which the whole system iteratively improves its ability to take our money and to refine the machine-learning strategies by which that goal is achieved. This involves watching us in greater detail and extracting finer and more predictive patterns in our behavior. In the past this was done by other people, now it is being done by machines whose capacity for data collection, storage, and analysis is many orders of magnitude greater in both scope and speed than that of humans. That is the threshold we are passing now, in the early part of the 21st century.

Race to the Bottom

Thus the rise of the machines begins in earnest just as it has become a hackneyed Hollywood cliché in the eyes of the public, a cartoon that numbs the mind far more than it elicits fear or paranoia. To become agitated about it now is to risk being forcibly escorted out of the building. Nevertheless, our worries should extend beyond the invasion of our personal spaces and even past the seeming usurpation of our human free will. There is an incipient destruction or at very least devaluation of human labor that is swiftly overwhelming the world’s economies. While this results in an enormous increase in worker and company productivity, it also results in displacement of the least skilled. This is occurring in parallel with large scale movement of labor to locations where it is least expensive. First it occurred with low skilled factory production, and now with highly skilled science and engineering activities. As robotic labor also rises in skill and productivity and becomes more cost-effective than its human counterpart, more and more workers of many social classes will be displaced. This is Marshall Brain’s Race to the Bottom.

It is comforting to recall that jobs that disappeared during the Industrial Revolution were replaced with arguably better ones (eventually) in factories. That may or may not occur in a world where machines can be more productive than humans across a broad range of activities. When cottage industry was made obsolete by factories, humans were needed in large numbers by both. Cottage industry jobs disappeared in large numbers, but factory jobs soon appeared, also in large numbers. That will only occur now to the extent that machines complement rather than replace human labor.

It is on everyone’s lips these days that a recession in which consumers can no longer consume is self-perpetuating. The rise of the machines must occur in parallel with their empowerment of human labor, anything else may well be sociologically suicidal. If they replace us rather than empower us, we are doomed.

Disruptive Technology

The disruptive technologies that enable this are the low cost, enormous power, and endless variety of microprocessors and the electronics that surround them. They require an additional magical ingredient to awaken them: enormous amounts of specialized software. Indeed, one of the very few labor markets that suffer only modest unemployment and still enjoy attractive salaries is that of software development and its related activities. As the world is inundated with computers and robots, somebody has to develop and maintain the millions of lines of programming code that run on them and breathe life into them. Like factory labor, it is also a field where outsourcing the work to lower cost Third World markets proceeds at a rapid pace. However, it’s unlikely that robots will take over this particular niche anytime soon. Software development requires the sort of creativity, reasoning, and knowledge that is still uniquely human. Software developers close to creators of innovative products are most secure. Those who do little more than maintain older code in a large organization will be more likely to have their jobs outsourced, and those who work on specialty software that is replaced by standardized commercial software will see their jobs disappear. There is an apocryphal maxim: “If physicists stand on each other’s shoulders, computer scientists stand on each others’ toes and computer programmers dig each others’ graves.” Stand on shoulders, don’t dig graves.

What You Can Do

It seems as if there is very little you can do, but that’s not the case. Try to be as self-sufficient as possible. Learn skills that are well-paid, in constant demand, require thought or creativity, and cannot be easily done by machines or people who are at remote locations. If you are in the Americas or in Europe, your hair cannot be cut by someone who is in Bangalore, and your plumbing cannot be fixed by someone in Shenzhen, and vice versa. Even in cubicle-land, your physical presence on-site and ability to walk over and collaborate with co-workers to resolve an issue in a timely manner can be very valuable, especially if the alternative is to wait until someone on the other side of the planet has to wake up and do it 12 hours later. Whether you cut hair or write code, seek out and cultivate the skills that are in local demand.

If you can convert a decorative lawn into a Victory Garden and grow some of your food on it or in a community garden, that’s just a little less dependence on organizations beyond your sphere of influence. Buy locally produced food and merchandise and keep your community’s wealth close to home. Try not to buy food that was brought in from foreign countries, or at least keep it to a minimum. Help local businesses export their wares and services to bring in more wealth than gets sent away. Buy goods and services from shops and companies that cultivate and reward human labor, and shun those that devalue it. Work at successful companies that are constantly creating new products and services, and that can’t afford to wait for things to happen thousands of miles away several hours from now.

Live as thrifty a lifestyle as you can without degrading your quality of life. Get plenty of exercise, eat a healthy diet, don’t smoke, and drink only in moderation (preferably not distilled spirits or carbohydrate-heavy drinks). Save money for your retirement, your kids’ educations (start before they’re born, trust me), and for all the rainy days to come. Avoid debt, and beware of taking on onerous mortgages.

Above all, make sure you constantly learn how to use computers, robots, and the cloud to empower your labor and increase your productivity as a person. Don’t let them take over or eliminate your job. Start growing your little army of robots before you are replaced by someone else’s.

Zombie Apocalypse

The Zombie Apocalypse of 2012

2012 will also be the year vast hordes of undead appear on the land to hunt you and your loved ones down, kill you mercilessly and with gratuitous violence, and attempt to eat you. If by some stroke of luck you manage to escape, but were bitten by one of these creatures (or if its bodily fluids managed to touch any of your mucosal tissues or otherwise get into your bloodstream), then within a few short hours you too will transformed by means a painful and terrifying metamorphosis into a one of these undead ghouls, a Zombie. No doubt you’re laughing to yourself, concluding that this is just some goofy joke, yet another conspiracy theory or crackpot prediction. Not. There will indeed be a full-blown, society-ending, humanity-transforming Zombie Apocalypse beginning on Z-Day, 2012 (not ZDAY). Such an event is described in the very Bible, and it is rather curious that such a dire prophecy is so far being ignored. Scientifically valid scenarios have been described by reputable analysts, and still, no major concerns among the general populace. Yet.

When is Z-Day?

Details are sketchy, but there is some consensus that it will occur (as luck would have it) on December 21, 2012, much like all of the other 2012 calamities. You can ask Yahoo! Answers for more info.

But What Is the Zombie Apocalypse?

It may well be that the Zombie Apocalypse will be different from the admittedly ridiculous film versions. Perhaps the disease is already among us. Perhaps the afflicted are already multiplying. Perhaps it is not any specific disease, but our inability to confront and deal with a broad range of devastating diseases. Perhaps a gradual onslaught of morbidity and mortality from existing diseases such as Alzheimer’s Syndrome, diabetes, cancer, HIV, Tuberculosis, obesity and its complications, heart disease, lung cancer, emphysema, and many others will become an unbearable burden that will figuratively eat us alive. Age will ensure that we all eventually become one of the afflicted as well, and once there are more dementia-addled elderly retirees than able-bodied workers to support them, well, Zombie Apocalypse. That would mean that Z-Day is in the past.

What to do?

Here is where someone much smarter and wiser than I would make some cogent and actionable proposals to deal with the problem. Lamentably, I have none. We can take a hint from supply-siders (and hope we aren’t as far off the mark as they) and try to reduce the production of unhealthy individuals, or at least keep them as healthy as possible for as long as possible. That would be us, though, and it would mean a drastic change in our lifestyles. Are you willing to eliminate extraneous dyes, flavorings, fragrances, and other additives from your food and household products? Are you willing to walk or jog 10 or more miles a week? 45 or more minutes a day? Sit for no more than a couple of hours a day? Stop using fossil fuels so that billions of tons of carcinogenic substances are no longer injected into the air we must all breathe? That sounds so difficult and unlikely as to be written off as a practical impossibility. That may ultimately be the metaphor of the Zombie Apocalypse story: only a colossal society-changing event can save us from destroying ourselves.

You can always just get the T-shirt.

A Refuge from Annihilation

Bugarach vue générale
The small village of Bugarach in southwest France. Some believe that a group of aliens is hiding in a cavern deep inside the 1,231 m Pic de Bugarach visible in the distance. Image by ArnoLagrange (GFDL)

Where will you be when that fateful moment arrives on December 21 (or 12), 2012? Will you be carelessly sipping coffee at Starbuck’s? Dutifully plugging away in your cubicle at work on the last Friday of your life? Helplessly running around in circles in the middle of the street, pathetically whimpering, tearfully simpering, and terrifiedly moaning and whining along with thousands of your fellow citizens? Or will you be prepared, ready to board a ship that will whisk you and your loved ones away from catastrophe and cataclysm, to live the rest of your happy life in peace and enlightenment? The choice is yours.

Already, people in the know have identified a secret location in the bucolic French countryside near Spain, where some believe such a thing has been scheduled for many, many years. The town of Bugarach, Aude Department, France is held to lie at the base of a dormant volcano that allegedly inspired Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. In his book Clovis Dardentor (online text), Verne allegedly encrypted various mystical codes relating to mysteries surrounding the locale. More recently occurred the mysterious death of one Daniel Bettex, who allegedly found and photographed the original and genuine biblical Ark of the Covenant within the mountain’s bowels. Nearby, in Rennes-le-Château, the Church of Mary Magdalene is also rife with mystery.
So it is not surprising that the region has been identified as a refuge from the end of the world (search for “Bugarach”), with the aid of alien beings, the Anunnaki, hiding within the mountain. The region is held to be visited frequently by UFOs. Some claim, however, that not even Bugarach will be safe.

So what should you do? You can hedge your bets and go, but the mayor of Bugarach is threatening to call in the army to keep you out of his lovely little village. You could always just go and take a Mystical French Adventure in the area, like everybody else. Save up your nickels and dimes beforehand, though.

Mystères du Mt Bugarach 2

Some French-explorer-looking dude is being interviewed about some mechanical noises coming out of a hole in the ground. At one point he says something about how it is related to Mt. Bugarach and that there are aliens down there and huge kilometer-scale something or other (it is in French, naturally). He doesn’t know who operates the alien base under Mt. Bugarach, but this one in the video is operated by beings from Orion and something something The Bible something Elohim. Your mileage may vary.

Galactic Alignment

Galactic Alignment is a hypothesis by author John Major Jenkins that links the end of the Mayan long count calendar with an alignment of the earth at winter solstice, the sun, and the equatorial plane of the Milky Way galaxy. He is not a promoter of the notion that the world will end in 2012, rather that some sort of spiritual evolution of consciousness will begin near that date. He points out that this alignment may already have occurred in 1998, but that is a very rough calculation. Boring, no? Still, this has not stopped others from seeing it as the root cause of the world’s demise in 2012.
What a letdown. In any case, as usual we offer a pertinent reading list for those stubborn die-hards who actually want to inform themselves further:

Nibiru, Planet X

One of the ways the world will end on December 21, 2012 is by getting collided into by Nibiru, otherwise known as Planet X or Nemesis (not the bad guys). We’re not talking about the band, the bicycles, or the “Extreme, Sports and Life & Style Global Brand“. You’ve got to admit, though, that both “Planet X” and “Nibiru” have a certain ring to them that make them irresistible as brands.
Briefly, Nibiru will come and collide with the earth, destroying everything we know and love. Gone. Bam. Zip. The End. This particular cataclysm will be unforgiving, as you might surmise from the enormity of the forces involved when two planet-sized bodies crash into each other at high speed. It may not crash directly into the earth, but pass near enough to apply enough force to cause a variety of calamities (Pole Shift, hurricanes, tsunamis, volcanism, etc.).
On the plus side, this would be a very exciting event, particularly for those on the side of the earth facing Nibiru. At first it would appear as a star, gradually growing in brightness until it was easily visible in broad daylight. In the final moments, viewers would suddenly see it grow rapidly into an object far larger than the moon. Tidal forces due to its gravity would wreak havoc and destruction all around them and cause people to be swept off their feet and tossed around moments before a breathtaking end as the earth is partially or completely torn to pieces. Luckily, the lability of short-term memory might spare us an awareness of the very last moments. It would be the most spectacular show ever seen, though, unless you were on the wrong side of the planet. In that case you would probably either be watching it live on cable TV or on the web, gripping your armchair in ever-increasing terror, or running around outside in a scene combining massive civil unrest with the heavy aerial bombardments of World War II. Shock and Awe as it has never before been conceived. Luckily, our fearless leaders are ready for it.
No point in worrying, though. Eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow you will enjoy the most awesome show of all time. The details are left as an exercise for the reader. 2012 On The Boob Tube

Boob Tube may be a bit archaic a term for Gen Y, given that there may not be a single vacuum tube in their entire houses, aside from light bulbs (unless their wealthy parents freaked out recently and swapped them all out for LEDs). It also has a bit of a soft-core nuance that is unintended. Perhaps 2012 On DVD would have been better, unless you’re still stuck in VHS or have already splurged and now have Blue Ray. Whatever.

Suffice to say that those who are disinclined to crack open any of the weighty tomes listed in previous posts, and who prefer that all of their knowledge of the universe come in the form of some kind of video, still have many convenient options. Herewith are a few DVDs that can be obtained from Netflix for your viewing pleasure and personal edification.

Bad 2012! Bad!

You have to take the bad with the good. Maybe you don’t have to, but as with all things there is some bad out there in the 2012 book world. Here are a few books available at Amazon that have an average rating of one star. That’s it, one thin star. Of course, “average rating” is a bit misused here, because as of this writing these books had only one review each. Maybe they’re actually really good, but only one reader felt like posting a review. In any case, here they are with a few choice snippets from either the reviews or the product descriptions. Tough crowd over there at Amazon. Office party gifts, anyone?

Noah’s Ark 2012: Journal David Rising
From the review: “This book contains only 2 pages of writing. The remaining pages are all blank. The ‘reader’ is supposed to write the book for the author and then send it back. I see that the ‘author’ David Rising (if that is his real name), has just ‘authored’ a similar ‘journal’ called Paranormal: Journal. Don’t waste your money, buy a diary instead.”

Decoding 2012: Doom, Destiny, or Just Another Day? Melissa Rossi
From the review: “Melissa (author) must be heart broken when she received the printed books from China and saw how the final product rendered.”

2012 Atlantis Sinks Again (Why) [Kindle Edition] Stefan Tony Sperry
From the review: “FIRST, this Kindle book is terribly formatted, so as to make it virtually unreadable. I couldn’t make my way through it. SECOND, (perhaps my error here), I thought this was a fiction work. Instead, it reads like a High School essay on Atlantis, its historical references and speculations”

Beyond 2012: What the Government Already Knows and What You Need to Know to Prepare [Kindle Edition] Andrew Jordan
From the review: “This was like eating a cream filled doughnut with no cream!”

2012: Catalyst for Your Spiritual Awakening: Using the Mayan Tree of Life to Discover Your Higher Purpose John J. Liptak
From the review: “In between the tests (which are like those silly ones you take in a magazine) the author provides boring information about the Mayans that most of us already know and that you could find by simply typing the word “Mayan” into Google and never having to search beyond the first couple of search results. I can only imagine that the author provided the useless information about the Mayans to fill space and make the book longer”

2012 Mayan Calendar Found in the Great Pyramid and Christ Return Brian Leonard Golightly Marshall
From the review: “I hope the books are written better than the product descriptions. I can’t make heads or tails of them.”
Product description: “Mayan Calendar experts cracked the language code, finding the date predicted when the solar system would cross into the northern hemisphere of the Milky Way Galaxy and the golden age would begin. In the Great Pyramid the same information and the end time when the last day is the same date, but it also predicts the return of Christ and He is on the planet today. The Great Pyramid conspiracy is the direct result of the Catholic Church, which hung a mask of Jesus hung upon the body of Lucifer. There is however a linking of ancient wonders within the Great Pyramid, which predicts that Brian Leonard Golightly Marshall was reborn to the earth January 11th 1944 in Australia. The key that opens the mysteries of the old Testament Hebrew pinpointing the second coming of Jesus is in the Mayan Calendar found also in the 5000 year old pyramid and is why the church destroyed the Mayans proof of Jesus far removed from the greatest enemy of Jesus the Catholic Church.Paradise begins in Australia.”

2012 and the Cabala [Kindle Edition] Dovid Krafchow
From the product description: “Besides a clear description of the intrinsic symmetry of creation 2012 and the Cabala offers a novel approach to incremental progression showing how time revolves around a center point like a spiral, getting closer each revolution to the climax – so too with the time of creation. An explanation derived from the Zohar-Book of Secret shows how time existed before time and how our time is threaded into other orbits of time. The speed of light by which we measure time is replaced by a new constant, a prophetic promise from the recent past. The ability to transverse the heavens is made available to all human beings through a simple formula, a new construct of creation is revealed as 2012 and the Cabala explains the last 6000 years of human history. Lastly, a positive prognostication for the future is found in the conclusion of 2012 and the Cabala where the Mayan, Roman and Hebrew calendars merge in a convocation of meaningful numbers and letters along with an astronomical display provisioned to historical modern events.”

Expedition Through Destruction [Kindle Edition] Chris J
From the review: “I didn’t read all of it when I saw the author was spouting science that wouldn’t work. e.g. he claimed that you could get power proportional to the length of drop of an exit pipe from a generator and spring at the top. Actually at usual air pressure at sea level, you can only get additional power from about the first 32 feet of drop, because the force of suction can only be equal to the air pressure.”

Merry Second-To-The-Last Christmas

Quite often, people stop me in the street and ask “Hey, 2012 Dude, how did you get to be a billionaire in less than two years?” My stock answer is “Because I’m very stingy. I save as much as I can on Christmas gifts every year!” To keep things simple, I leave out that little episode about the derivatives trading. I don’t want to confuse people with extraneous detail or they’ll miss the main point (I was exonerated on all counts, by the way).

I know you’re all dutifully worked up about the world ending soon, and how this coming Christmas and Hanukah will be the second to the last for all time, forever and ever. I keep getting email after email from people whose hair has fallen out, they’ve lost an alarming amount of weight, and do nothing but blubber incoherently in their cubicles at work. That’s good, very good. Those are healthy and socially appropriate emotional outlets. However, many others tell me all that’s fine and good, but the world won’t end for two years, and they need to start doing their Christmas shopping now. Maybe you want to fully inform yourself about the grim chaos and destruction to come, maybe you need a quickie gift under $20 for the office holiday party, maybe you’re just lazy and cheap like me (all perfectly valid reasons), but you need to cut costs!

Well, seek no more, my panic-stricken nervous wrecks! Herewith is a list of the 44 least expensive you-know-what books rated with four or more stars (last time I checked) at Amazon.com. Surely there are a few that will fit your needs nicely? Four stars means that our highly educated and vastly literate fellow citizens have applied their finely honed intellects to crowd source a rating that will save you time and effort and allow you to morally justify to yourself any snap impulse purchases that may occur over the next hour or so. Dude! It’s Christmastime!

2012: The End of the World

Palenque Galactic Alignment

The end of the world as we know it. (© innovari fotolia.com)

OK, no more beating around the bush. The world will in fact end starting on December 21, 2012. You know it. I know it. They know it. There’s no point in pretending it won’t happen, because it will. Should you be scared? No, you should be terrified. You should be freaking out, screaming and yelling, dribbling saliva all over your clothing. You should become profoundly embittered that your life will be tragically cut short during its best years. You should be so unable to cope that you resort to going on welfare and smoking dope all day every day watching Cartoon Network 24/7. If you manage to get yourself laid off from that pointless job, unemployment insurance just might last all the way to the end. It’s that bad. And things were going so well, too. How do I know? I just do, that’s all. They wouldn’t let me put up a web site talking about it if it wasn’t true, would they?

Speaking of which, while this is certainly by far the most interesting, reputable, and cleverly named such site, it is by no means the only one. Here are a few more in case you’re some kind of pretentious skeptic who just hasn’t yet caught on to what will inevitably happen in the very near future. Note the striking domain names and imaginative page titles. A casual reader might feel they are a bit overly SEO-optimized, but of course that would be completely wrong, and we can prove it (OK, maybe not always).
